Everyone loves the holidays. Whether it’s the crisp weather, the holiday spirit, or spending quality time with loved ones, it’s hard to beat this time of year.
From a marketing standpoint, watching the types of holiday commercials that come out is equally as exciting. This is one of my favorite aspects of exploring the marketing world because brand creativity gets to really shine… and spread the holiday cheer.
Normally depicting traditional and perfect holiday advertisements, Hallmark is thinking outside the box with its new “unfiltered” #KeepsakeIt campaign. “Family Portrait” is a funny clip of a crazy family motley-crew posing for a holiday picture. Amidst the chaos, Nana is telling her granddaughter with a selfie stick, “You know, I take selfies!” This multi-generational incorporation, especially showing the realistic chaos of family gatherings, is what will resonate with customers. Of course, Hallmark is simultaneously promoting its line of Keepsake Christmas ornaments.
A second Hallmark #KeepsakeIt commercial “Look at My Baby” depicts new, overly fussy parents of a newborn baby genius. They can’t stop taking pictures of him and bragging about his abilities. (Don’t we all know people like this?)
Humor seems to be a common thread for Christmas commercials. ALDI Australia has honed in on the stress and chaos leading up to the holidays in its “Now This is Christmas” commercial. Too many of us can relate.
It’s easy to get caught up in the happiness of the holidays, but some people feel lonely during this time of year. This is the insight and emotional ploy behind the British retail chain John Lewis’s 2015 Christmas commercial, reminding people to “Show someone they’re loved this Christmas.”
I can’t wait to see what other brands come up with for Christmas advertisements. Have a wonderful holiday season!
